Annual Hike 20081117 Reflections
Lim Jia Ying
Orchid patrol
We set off at exactly 0930, one of the last few patrols to leave actually.
At that time, the weather was fine, and the day looked promising, perfect for hiking.
Our first stop was
Ang Mo Kio MRT station, which we required to change the MRT line. Once we reached there, we quickly took a picture and figured out our way to our next destination- Lower Pierce reservoir.
We had some trouble finding our way there because from the direction we faced, we could not see the signboard which led to it. Fortunately we managed to find
Lower Pierce Reservoir in the end. Then, the sky had begun to turn a few shades darker already. Knowing that we were behind time- having taken about one and a half hour getting to the first checkpoint, we quickened our pace.
True enough, it began to rain not long after. As the rain got heavier, we had no choice but to stop at the
nearby petrol station. We took advantage of the downpour to have our lunch. We resumed our hike when the rain receded about 40minutes later.
The next checkpoint was the furthest journey. We traveled to the
MacRitchie Reservoir through the drizzle. Thankfully, the rain did not dampen our spirits. The secondary one scouts was familiar with that place, thus he guided us there. We did not actually manage to see the reservoir, but were in the vicinity were there were signboards.
Our third checkpoint was the Old Police Academy. We started to feel a little tired already, as we hurried along with the scouts in our water soaked shoes. The sky had cleared by then and we took off our ponchos.
Next target was a school indicated on the map. However, there were no landmarks in that area which we could look out for, so looking for the school was misleading yet challenging. We later spotted a kindergarten and decided that it would be the most appropriate choice.
Newton MRT station was our next checkpoint. We had some trouble getting there was an intersection where there was no pedestrian crossing. We therefore backtracked and found a direct path leading to Newton MRT station.
Leaving Newton MRT station for Dhoby Ghaut MRT station, we were in a dilemma because the road ahead was once again without a pedestrian crossing, but it was vital that we headed that way. It suddenly occurred to us that we could go through an underpass which linked the MRT station to both sides of the road. The journey there was a twisting one, we passed by the istana too.
We heard that dove patrol was at their last checkpoint, so we got excited and had great urge to do our best to overtake them, even though we were at our second last checkpoint –Fort Canning Park. We ran through lanes, across roads, sprinted up strairs and reached there in record time. (at least I would think so)
The scouts then lead the way to War memorial(our last checkpoint), where we saw dove patrol across the road! We hurried to get to our final destination and much to our surprise, we were the first group who reached there! Our patrol mates were all ecstatic, and glad that our efforts had paid off.
All in all, I felt that this hike was a rather meaningful one, it was certainly nothing like any of my experiences before.
Of course, we could not have done it without everybody’s cooperation and determination.
Cheers to Valerie, Deborah, Mindy, me, Jasmine, Pamela, Josephine, Marcus, Wen Jun and Bingyi!
amazing how places that used to be alien are so close to home now...
i miss the vigorousness of guides alot!
